    1. (Reprinted from the Chicago Center for Literature and Photography [cclapcenter]. I am the original author of this essay, as well as the owner of CCLaP; it is not being reprinted illegally.)By now, of course, alt-history novels are nothing new, although unfortunately most of them suffer from the same problem; given that the majority of them are written by genre veterans, they tend to be heavily focused on their overly complex and action-oriented plots, and for the most part are lacking in other t [...]

    2. Summer of the Long Knives is a speculative story about the assassination of Adolf Hitler, one of the most hated men in history. Summer of the Long Knives is the name of a purge that took place in Nazi Germany from June 30 to July 2, 1934, when the Nazi regime carried out a series of political murders. Just that sentence is enough to give me chills. Lisel Ganz is brutally attacked by Nazi Brownshirts, She befriends Konrad who brings her into his home after the attack, where Lisel soon becomes inv [...]

    3. This is a hauntingly beautiful book about what could have happened if Hitler had been assassinated in the early years of his reign. The story starts with a brutal rape of a non-Jewish German woman who just happens to walk past a Berlin synagogue right after services let out. The streets of Berlin really come alive in this book. It's an intelligent look at a little-discussed part of history that could have magically gone another way with the flick of a switch.

    4. Okay, so maybe "alt-history" is a simplistic way of describing this book. It reads like a fever-dream one might have after reading too many personal experiences of Germany during the Nazi era. That said, it is very hard to put down owing to the well-fleshed characters and on-rushing plot. Just loved it.

    5. It's a well-written novel which gives great insight into what life was like in Nazi Germany during the war years but I spent the whole time wondering if this was fact or fiction and where they blurred into one. If you're more knowledgeable of the ins and outs of German history, I'm sure you'd have no such qualms though, so it's a book I'd like to reread after having swotted up on what really went on behind the scenes in Nazi Germany just before the end of the war. It's also quite poignant, makin [...]
